Business Case for Change

The business case for change is the correlation between under-representation of women and skills shortages and the link to economic productivity. Opportunities are being missed, both on the part of employers and potential apprentices. Women’s skills, generally not previously recognized, are under-used in an economy that needs the best people. Profitable companies know that diversity in the workforce builds capacity to meet the demands of changing economies.

STEP for Women is promoting women not as an equality issue, but as a key productivity and business issue among employers. We must revisit the trades and challenge the role of stereotypes and perceptions of what trades are to young people, employers, parents and teachers as a key issue affecting recruitment. STEP for Women is working to develop a greater understanding of employer needs and demonstrate the business benefits gender equality can bring.

"Our goal is to encourage young people to look at careers in the trades as a first choice option and to encourage those that influence their decision to look at it as well."
Keith Lancastle of Canadian Apprenticeship Forum.
